How to Charge a Refrigerator Condenser

The air-conditioning unit within a refrigerator is composed of a fan, compressor and condensers, which are a set of coils that have refrigerant running through them to help defrost the appliance. If your refrigerator isn't defrosting or working properly, you may need to charge the condensers by adding freon directly to the compressor valve, which is connected to the condenser coils. Freon is a hazardous refrigerant, and you must have a certification to use it when repairing your refrigerator.

Instructions

    • 1

Move your refrigerator away from the wall, and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

    • 2

Locate the compressor, which is at the bottom rear of the refrigerator. It's usually black with black and various colored wires attached to it.

    • 3

Open the valve on the center of the compressor using an adjustable wrench to open the cap of the valve.

    • 4

Connect a vacuum pump to the valve, and turn on the vacuum pump to clean out the condensers. Close the valve.

    • 5

Disconnect the vacuum pump from the compressor valve. Connect a siphon hose to a cylinder of freon.

    • 6

Connect the other end of the hose to the compressor valve, and use a clamp to tighten the hose to the valve.

    • 7

Open the valve, allowing the freon to enter the compressor and condensers. Turn off the valve once the condensers are filled.

    • 8

Disconnect the siphon hose from the valve and freon cylinder. Plug your refrigerator's power cord back into the wall outlet.
