How to Take Apart an Admiral Refrigerator

Admiral brand refrigerators have been made by several different companies over the decades. Since 1986, Maytag, which is now part of Whirlpool, has owned the rights to the name and has applied it to many home appliances, including many refrigerators. Moving an Admiral refrigerator to a new house or a different room in your current property is sometimes difficult if the appliance is in one piece. Taking the doors, shelves, bins and handles off the refrigerator make it easier to move down narrow passageways. Taking the appliance apart also makes it easier to recycle at the end of its service life. Disassembly takes about 30 minutes using common household tools.

Instructions

Unplug the refrigerator and tie up the power cable with a zip tie. If the appliance has an ice maker or water dispenser, shut off the cold-water valve. Empty the ice bucket into the sink and run the dispenser into a large container until it runs dry. Unscrew the water line from the valve and tie it up. Use pliers to loosen the connection, if necessary.

Empty the fresh food and freezer compartments and take out the crisper drawers, removable door bins and shelves and place them to one side. Take the bucket used to store the ice cubes out of the freezer and prop the doors open.

    • 3

Pry off the plastic cap protecting the hinge on top of the appliance with a putty knife and remove the bolts underneath with a socket wrench. Take the top hinge off and lift the freezer door upward to remove it from the middle hinge. Remove the bolts of the middle hinge, lift it off the appliance, then lift the fresh food door off the lower hinge. Once booth doors are off, remove the lower hinge. Have an assistant help support the doors if you find the process difficult on your own.

Lean the doors against a wall and remove the screws holding the handles in place. Tip the doors on their sides and remove the metal plate on the bottom of each one. Gather the pieces of the appliance; it is now ready to be moved or recycled.
