How to Install a Relay & Overload Kit on a Maytag Refrigerator

The relay and overload kit is a plastic electrical part that is connected to the compressor unit in the back of your Maytag refrigerator. The kit is responsible for controlling the electrical power that runs to the compressor -- and the kit also helps to ensure the electrical power doesn't exceed the limit for the appliance. If your refrigerator power continues to die then you should manually replace the relay and overload kit part, which can be ordered from the Maytag manufacturer.

Instructions

    • 1

Move your Maytag refrigerator away from the wall and unplug the power cable from the outlet.

    • 2

Remove the screws from the bottom access panel on the rear of the refrigerator using a hex-head wrench.

    • 3

Lift up and remove the bottom access panel from the refrigerator. Locate the cylinder-shaped compressor inside the bottom rear of the refrigerator. The relay overload part is connected to the side of the compressor.

    • 4

Insert a flathead screwdriver into the relay and overlay kit, and press down on the screwdriver to pry off the kit part.

    • 5

Lift out the relay and overload kit part. Disconnect the wire connectors from the kit, and remove the entire kit out of the refrigerator.

    • 6

Connect the wire connectors to the terminals on the new relay and overload kit part. Press the kit part in the refrigerator to the side of the compressor so that it snaps into place.

    • 7

Place the bottom access panel back onto the refrigerator and reinsert the screws into the access panel. Plug the power cord back into the outlet.
