How to Maintain a Shiny Black Refrigerator Door

Many modern refrigerator manufacturers take great care at the production factory to apply the baked-on black coat that produces a high-quality finish and luster. Similarly, you have to make a concerted effort at home to clean and maintain the exterior, helping the coat keep its aesthetic qualities. Additionally, the principal material that comprises the doors and frames on many refrigerators is sometimes only regular steel, which is more susceptible to rusting than stainless steel. As you follow these steps to clean and maintain the door on your black refrigerator, you might need to consider an additional feature as a part of the door's overall upkeep.

Instructions

Wet a cotton cloth with warm water. Wring out excess water over the sink, leaving the towel damp. Add a few drops of liquid dish soap to the towel. Rub the towel together to create a light lather, but don't create too many suds or bubbles. Wipe down the entire surface of the exterior refrigerator door with the soapy cloth.

Wet the second cotton cloth with warm water and wring it out. Do not add soap. Wipe down the door's exterior to remove leftover soap residue and debris. You may have to rinse this towel under the faucet and repeat this step a few more times until no soapy, rainbow-like smudges show on the black surface of the refrigerator's door.

Wipe down the wet surface of the refrigerator with the third dry cloth. Use a circular, buffing type action to begin the process of bringing out the inherent luster of the black paint. The type and quality of paint may be too dull for a shine to fully appear.

Apply appliance polish to the door of the refrigerator according to the instructions on the bottle. You usually apply the polish after cleaning old, built-up debris from the exterior surface. Use the fourth clean towel for this step, if the instructions call for it. Polish brings out the shine, but also forms a protective coat from future dirt and dust buildup.

Pour a couple of tablespoons of undiluted vinegar into the ice and water dispenser tray, if it is deep enough to hold standing liquids. Let the vinegar dissolve hard water deposits that have built up over time, for about 30 minutes. Wipe and soak up the vinegar with a paper towel. Use another wet paper towel to wipe away residual vinegar and the accompanying smell. Fold and place a clean paper towel in the tray so that it can soak up spilled water whenever someone uses the dispenser. Periodically replace the paper towel, to maintain the cleanliness of the tray.
