How to Troubleshoot the Whirlpool Fridge Model GS5SHGXKS00

The Whirlpool side-by-side fridge model GS5SHGXKS00 includes ice and water dispensers. After installation of your refrigerator, you shouldn't have to worry about its cooling performance, nor the operation of the ice and water features. However, over time, this Whirlpool fridge, like any model or brand, can experience problems that adversely affect its ability to keep the two compartments cold, or prevent the proper release of ice cubes and drinking water. These issues concern internal and external factors. You can troubleshoot at least four general areas that concern the fridge's electrical powering, temperature, ice maker production and the water supply line.

Things You'll Need

Check the power cord and the electrical system if the Whirlpool fridge does not operate. Carefully pull the fridge from the wall to make sure the plug is secured in the electrical outlet. Walk to the fuse or circuit breaker box; replace a blown fuse or flip the breaker back to the "On" position. Also, the fridge might be in an defrost mode, turning cooling off for about 30 minutes; wait for this automated process to complete. Make sure no one has turned the fridge completely off, such as during deep cleaning; turn the switch back to "On."

Root out internal and external temperature problems if the fridge runs too long. Use a room thermometer to measure the ambient temperature in the kitchen, and keep in mind the heated air from baking and cooking will cause the Whirlpool's motor to run longer. Normal room temperature is around 70 degrees. Avoid opening the fridge's doors too frequently; remove recipe ingredients in one trip. Adjust the fridge for cooler temperatures if you live in a climate that is generally warm. Wipe and feel around the rubbery door gasket for dirt buildup; if this seal is torn or damaged, call for service to have it professionally replaced. Unplug the refrigerator, remove the base grille and use a vacuum to carefully clean dust and dirt from the condenser.

Examine the whole freezer compartment for issues with the ice maker. Press firmly on the freezer door to make sure it closed. On some models, pull the ice bin out and then carefully reinsert the container to make sure it is completely seated in its slot. Shake the ice bucket or bin to separate clumps of ice cubes that have coalesced. Use a small plastic spatula to carefully clear ice that is stuck in the delivery chute. Release the dispenser arm if it has been held up or down for too long; wait three minutes for the dispenser motor to reset.

Inspect the water supply system if the water dispenser is not working properly. Carefully and slowly pull the refrigerator from the wall to expose the back. Turn the water shutoff valve completely in the "On" direction, as indicated on the knob. Make sure the water filter, if in use, is installed correctly so that it is not obstructing the flow of water. Flush the fridge's water system in a 5-gallon bucket if you are a new resident or returning from vacation; press the dispenser bar to allow about 2 to 3 gallons of water to fill the bucket. This clears air from the water dispenser system.
