Unplug the refrigerator or turn off the electricity for the appliance at the main circuit breaker.
Move the refrigerator away from the wall so you can work on it. Take care when moving the appliance across the floor so it doesn't scratch. Some Frigidaire models are equipped with wheels at the front that make moving the appliance easier.
Look for the capacitor on the Frigidaire frame or connected to the compressor body. Capacitors are generally about 2 to 3 inches high and circular. Remove any protective covering that may be in place to expose the terminals.
Discharge the capacitor before removing or touching it. Connect a piece of wire with an alligator clip to a 20K Ohm resistor. Connect the other end to a screwdriver. Repeat this process with the free terminal at the other end of the resistor. Touch one screwdriver to each of the terminals. Hold in place for several seconds to discharge the capacitor. Wait about half a minute, then repeat the discharging process again.
Loosen the clips or screws holding the capacitor in place and remove. Replace with a new capacitor. Replace any protective covering.
Wait 15 minutes to allow the refrigerator to recharge. Restore power to the refrigerator and make sure that it is working properly. Move the refrigerator back to the original location.
