How Do I Replace an Auger Helix on a GE Refrigerator?

When the ice maker of your General Electric refrigerator freezer is is engaged, the ice is crushed with crusher blades inside the ice dispenser and then the ice is moved around with the auger helix. The auger helix is a long, twisted metal shaft in the center of the dispenser, and the part can be removed at any time if it is broken. You can order a replacement part through your GE manufacturer or through an online retailer.

Instructions

    • 1

Move your GE refrigerator away from the wall then unplug the power cord from the outlet.

    • 2

Open the freezer door and remove the four screws from the front cover of the ice maker, then detach it and set it aside.

    • 3

Turn the actuator rod, which is a small metal rod in the center of the ice maker that juts outward, clockwise. Lift up and remove the rod.

    • 4

Insert a flathead screwdriver below the "E" ring, which is a small metal ring that looks like a washer located on the top of the auger. Press down to lift up the part. Remove the ring from the ice dispenser.

    • 5

Lift up and remove the small metal crusher blades, located below where the "E" ring was, from the dispenser. The metal arm is what you push a glass down on to dispense the ice.

    • 6

Remove the white plastic nut from the top of the auger helix using an adjustable wrench, which dislodges the auger. Lift up the auger and remove it from the dispenser.

    • 7

Insert a new auger helix into the same position in the dispenser and then reinsert the nut onto the dispenser.

    • 8

Pull the metal arm down and slide the crusher blades back over the auger. Reinsert the "E" ring, then reinsert the actuator rod.

    • 9

Place the front cover onto the dispenser and reinsert the four screws onto the front panel. Close the freezer and plug the power cord back in.
