Broken Light Switch on a Maytag MSD2651HEW

The Maytag MSD2651HEW is a side-by-side refrigerator that is designed for installation and use in a residential kitchen. The refrigerator has a light switch located in the freezer and fresh food compartment that detects whether the respective compartment door is in the open or closed position. After regular use of the refrigerator, one or both of the switches may fail, preventing the light from turning on or off.
  1. Safety Precautions

    • Before performing any repairs to your Maytag MSD2651HEW refrigerator, it is important to disconnect the refrigerator's power supply. To disconnect the power supply, unplug the refrigerator from the wall outlet. If the power cord is not accessible, turn off the refrigerator breaker in your home's service panel.

    Light Switch Function

    • The light switch is actually a mechanical circuit that is opened and closed by the door. When the door is closed the switch is pressed in, breaking the circuit and disconnecting the power to the light. When the door is opened, the switch is released, allowing power to flow to the light.

    Reasons for Failure

    • The light switch is constructed of heavy plastic, which relies on a spring to push the switch out when the door is opened. Over time, the spring may wear out, or the plastic may become damaged, preventing the switch from properly functioning.

    Replacing the Light Switch

    • To replace the light switch, first open the door of the compartment containing the faulty switch. Use a putty knife the pry the old light switch out of the refrigerator wall, and pull the switch away from the wall. Transfer the wire connectors from the old switch to the new switch. The wire connectors do not have tabs, and they simply slide on and off of the terminals on the light switch. Once the wires are connected, tuck them into the light switch opening in the refrigerator wall and then snap the light switch into position.
