Fridgidaire FRT18 Freezer Not Cooling

Frigidaire freezers using a cooling system made of refrigerant that cycles warmth out of the freezer compartment, keeping down the temperature to a certain range. After the cooling cycle, a thawing cycle occurs to defrost the compartment. If your 18-cubic foot Frigidaire FRT18 unit is not cooling at all, you may have a serious problem with the power or efficiency in your system.
  1. Settings

    • Begin by checking your settings. Your Frigidaire has temperature settings you can change to control how cold the freezer compartment is. If you've turned the settings down too low, the cooling system will try again and again to reach those low temperatures but won't be able to go that far. On the other hand, if you raised temperatures too high, your freezer won't cool off at all.

    Compressors and Other Units

    • If the freezer doesn't appear to be working and you can't hear the motors or any of the other noises associated with normal operation, the problem may be one of the main units like the compressor. The condensor and the evaporator also have important roles to play in the cycle. If they fail, the refrigerant can't do its job. This may mean an expensive replacement to repair the issue.

    Clogs, Ice and Other Issues

    • If you hear your system running, but it doesn't appear to be running properly, the problem may not be a failed component but wear on your system. Clogs in the air vents may be preventing air from circulating in your Frigidaire compartment. Ice on the evaporator coils can cause the same lack of efficiency. Dust and dirt on any of your components may be the reason your refrigerator is no longer working properly. Clean the system thoroughly to see if this solves the problem.

    Timer Issues

    • Your Frigidaire freezer has a timer controlling the switch from the cooling cycle to the defrost cycle. If this timer becomes stuck, your freezer may not be able to cool properly when it starts to cycle. A stuck timer is usually the result of an electrical or mechanical problem, which calls for the replacement of key parts.
