Accessing the Drain Plug for a Frigidaire Top Mount Refrigerator

When water is leaking or an excess amount of frost is building up inside the freezer of a Frigidaire top mount refrigerator, the drain plug is probably clogged. This is something that many homeowners can repair on their own but the first step is accessing the drain plug inside the refrigerator.
  1. Drain Plug Location

    • The drain plug is about halfway down the rear wall of the Frigidaire freezer. However, the plug is protected by the rear wall of the refrigerator, which will have to be removed before the drain plug can be accessed and cleaned.

    Accessing the Drain Plug

    • Disconnect power to the refrigerator first, and then remove the food and the ice maker from the freezer. Two screws on the ice maker hold the ice maker in place. Remove the screws and disconnect the plug-in harness, then take out the ice maker and set aside. Take out the screws holding the back wall in place and lift off the wall, using caution not to damage the evaporator coils when removing the panel. Underneath the coils is the drain plug, which is likely covered with a thick layer of ice.

    Melting the Ice

    • Before you can clean the drain plug, you need to get to the plug. Use a hair dryer to carefully melt the ice covering the drain plug and wipe the area clean with a dry towel. Melt as much ice inside the drain plug as possible without heating up the drain too much with the hair dryer.

    Cleaning

    • Pour hot water into the drain plug and use a cloth to wipe up the excess water. Allow the ice in the plug to melt slightly and add more hot water. Repeat until the water flows down the drain instead of out of the top of the drain plug. Ensure that the water flows freely down the drain by poking a straw down the drain, then wipe the drain one more time with the towel and replace the back panel and the ice maker. Connect the power to the refrigerator and turn the freezer temperature controls to the middle position. Wait 24 hours for the freezer to cool and then replace the food.
