Unplug the fridge to prevent the risk of electrical accident during repair. Empty the fridge and ice maker to give you better access to fridge components.
Run a vacuum attachment over the coils in the back of the fridge and scrub them with a coil brush to remove dirt and debris. Dust covers the coils and insulates them so they don't work as effectively. Cleaning the coils often fixes the problem so they function normally again.
Unscrew the ice maker from the freezer with a screwdriver if it is leaking, and unhook the wiring harness in the back. Clean the ice maker with warm water or rubbing alcohol to remove any dirt or deposits, and then apply epoxy to any cracks in the tubes or the housing. Wipe away any excess with a rag, and hold the two sides of the crack together until the epoxy dries. Replace the ice maker by plugging the wiring harness back in and screwing it back into its housing.
Open the access panel in the freezer with your screwdriver if the defrost heater isn't working right. The panel is either in the back or the floor of the freezer. Unscrew the evaporator once the panel is removed, and pull it out to access the defroster underneath it. Remove the wire connectors and pull it out. Seal any cracks with epoxy, and wrap electrical tape around any frayed wires. If the unit still doesn't work properly, replace it with a new one by lowering a replacement into the same space, connecting the wires and placing the evaporator back over it. Screw the freezer panel back on again.
Replace a leaking or faulty water filter housing by unscrewing a small panel in the upper corner of the fridge. This is usually on the right side. Remove the cover to reveal the housing and unbolt it with a bolt driver. Pull off the two water line tubes at the top and press them back down over a new housing. Bolt the new housing in place and put the cover back on. Throw away the defective filter.
Pour warm vinegar down the defrost drain of the freezer to help repair any clogs or blockages that cause leaks.
