How to Check the Air Return From the Fridge to the Freezer on a Whirlpool Fridge

The motorized air baffle in your Whirlpool refrigerator is connected between the refrigerator and freezer portions of the unit. The air baffle regulates the air flow from the freezer to the refrigerator. The air baffle opens if the air is too warm or cold, and causes the evaporator fan to run to keep the temperature running regularly. If you think the baffle may be the cause of the temperature defaulting, you may test the air baffle using the diagnostics mode to see if the motor needs to be replaced.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the Whirlpool refrigerator away from the wall, and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

    • 2

Open the refrigerator door, and locate the air baffle cover inside the unit at the top left.

    • 3

Look inside the cover to see if the air baffle vent is closed or open. If the vent is closed, select a temperature on the control panel that is above 41 degrees F or below 33 degrees F to open the air baffle.

    • 4

Press and hold down the "Power" and "Water Filter Reset" buttons at the same time for three seconds to enter the diagnostics mode.

    • 5

Press and hold down the "Power" and "Water Filter Reset" buttons until a "5" appears on the LED of the control panel.

    • 6

Allow for the baffle motor to be activated and checked. If the LED light next to the "Change" field flashes "Read," then the air baffle motor should be replaced. If the "Good" LED flashes a green light, then the air baffle is working properly.
