How to Make the Motor Turn on an Ice Maker

Modular ice makers operate with a sensor bar to monitor the level of ice in the dispenser bin. The sensor triggers a fresh cycle whenever the ice dips below a certain level, causing the ice maker motor to activate. Water from the supply line enters the trays, freezes and then ejects into the bin. If you cannot wait for the machine to start up, then you can turn the motor on the ice maker to start a cycle manually by following this override procedure.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

  1. Overriding Typical Electronic Ice Maker

    • 1

Open the freezer door to access the ice maker, typically in the upper left corner.

    • 2

Remove the end cap on the ice maker to expose the nylon gear wheels and a series of holes underneath. The end cap pries off with gentle pressure.

    • 3

Cut and strip 3/4 inches of insulation from each end of the electrical wire and bend the wire into a U shape.

    • 4

Hold the wire by the insulation while wearing work gloves.

    • 5

Insert the wire ends into the holes labeled "T" and "H" on the end of the ice maker. The motor will activate.

    • 6

Remove the wire and replace the end cap.

    Overriding GE Ice Makers

    • 7

Pull and hold the ice rake arm until the feeler arm begins moving upward. The rake arm, found in GE ice makers manufactured before 2000, pushes a fresh harvest of ice into the dispenser bin below the ice maker. The motor will start.

    • 8

Turn off a GE ice maker manufactured after 2000 and wait 30 seconds. The toggle switch is on the end cap of the unit.

    • 9

      Switch on the ice maker.

    • 10

Immediately press the feeler arm at the top back of the ice maker three times to trigger the motor and start a fresh cycle.
