How to Fix a Refrigerator's Water Pump

If your refrigerator water dispenser is not working, water is pooling in your refrigerator compartments, or your fridge develops leaking problems, the issue is probably your water supply line and the pumping mechanisms that it uses. Many refrigerators do not have an actual pump, relying instead on house water pressure, but they still have supply line controls with valves and filters that can develop problems.
  1. Accessing Water Valve

    • Turn off the power and the water to your refrigerator and unplug it. Place protective mats on your floor to avoid damage, then move the refrigerator away from the wall so that you can access the back of it. At the bottom of the back of the fridge, there should be an open panel containing the primary water supply lines and the main electrical connection points.

    Water Lines

    • Your fridge will have a thick water supply line running into it. This is usually the largest and most noticeable line -- it may be labeled -- with smaller lines coming out of it for the ice maker and the water dispenser. Check this line for any signs of corrosion, leaks or damage. Tighten the connections or replace the line as needed, using a small wrench.

    General Maintenance

    • Examine the water system for dust and dirt. Clean it thoroughly and check for any problems. The water supply line is connected to the fridge with a bracket system that you can detach to examine more closely. The tubing inside the bracket system can develop stress cracks. If the supply valve appears to be damaged, remove the valve and replace it with a new one, using the existing wiring.

    Clogged Drains

    • The water problems that your refrigerator is experiencing may be the result of a clogged drain or filter. Check your refrigerator drain in the freezer to make sure that it's clear. You may also need to replace the water filter in your fridge, especially if it is old. You can access the filter from the front of your fridge. Check your owner's manual for its exact location.
