How to Defrost the Fridge With a Hair Dryer

Newer refrigerator models typically come with frost-free or self-defrost features. With one of these models, you no longer have to worry about ice buildup decreasing the space and performance of your refrigerator's freezer. If you have an older model, you might not be so lucky. While there are ways to prevent ice from building up rapidly, you still have to defrost regularly. You can remove frost from your refrigerator with the use of a hair dryer.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove all the food in the refrigerator. Store it in sealed coolers while you defrost.

    • 2

Lay old, clean bath towels in the bottom of the refrigerator and on the shelves to catch water as the ice buildup is melted.

    • 3

Unplug the refrigerator and plug in the hair dryer. Set the dryer on "Medium" heat.

    • 4
The heat from a hair dryer makes speedy work of defrosting.

Aim the flow of hot air toward the top area of the ice buildup. Move the blow dryer in a back-and-forth sweeping motion to slowly melt the ice. Change towels as needed and continue to melt the buildup of frost.

    • 5

Turn off the hair dryer and plug the refrigerator back in. Remove the wet towels from the refrigerator.

    • 6

Wipe down the interior of the refrigerator with clean cloths to remove any moisture left on the surfaces. Restock the refrigerator with your food items.
