How to Replace the Cooling Thermostat on a Kenmore Upright Freezer

Kenmore is the staple appliance brand of Sears. Sears doesn't actually make Kenmore appliances and typically relies on Whirlpool, Frigidaire and LG to do the manufacturing on Kenmore refrigerators and freezers. Sears then places a Kenmore label on the appliance and then distributes it through its chain of stores. Regardless of make, the process for replacing a malfunctioning cooling thermostat remains similar among most freezer models. Replacing the cooling thermostat in a Kenmore upright freezer requires a few basic tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the freezer to avoid the risk of electric shock while replacing the thermostat. Empty the freezer to give yourself full access to the thermostat panel. If ice has built up in the freezer, allow it to defrost before continuing.

    • 2

Pop off the front cover of the thermostat panel to gain access to the screws underneath.

    • 3

Unscrew the thermostat using a screwdriver and carefully slide it out of the freezer. Some Kenmore freezers have the thermostat clipped in place so you can just pull it off. Unhook the wiring harness off the back of the thermostat to completely take it out of the freezer.

    • 4

Hook the wiring harness into the back of your replacement thermostat and slide it back into the freezer.

    • 5

Screw the replacement thermostat into place or clip it back into position and plug the freezer back in to resume operation.
