How to Repair an Ice Dispenser Flap on a Kenmore Freezer

Many Kenmore side-by-side refrigerators have an ice and water dispenser installed on the outside of the freezer door. The ice dispenser has a flap that opens to allow ice to be released, and closes after dispensing to keep the cold air inside of the freezer. The dispenser flap is opened and closed by a solenoid, that when energized pulls the plunger attached to the flap, opening the door. If the flap stops opening and closing, it is likely due to a faulty solenoid.

Instructions

    • 1

Move the refrigerator away from the wall and unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. Turn off the water supply valve by turning the handle clockwise until tight.

    • 2

Remove the drip tray from the bottom of the dispenser by pulling it straight away from the door. Remove the screws that are visible at the bottom of the dispenser with the drip tray removed, and then slide the front panel of the dispenser up and off of the dispenser housing. If no screws are visible, look on the underside of the front panel for a pry hole, then insert a flat-head screwdriver and gently pry the trim off of the refrigerator. If no pry hole is present, grasp the control panel by the bottom and pull it away from the dispenser to remove.

    • 3

Remove the control panel wire connector or connectors and set the control panel or front panel aside.

    • 4

Remove the screws securing the dispenser module, and then remove the module from the dispenser housing.

    • 5

Remove the screw on the bottom of the solenoid, which is installed on the side of the door flap. Loosen, but do not remove the top screw.

    • 6

Move the solenoid outward and remove it from the dispenser.

    • 7

Replace the plunger if necessary by unhooking it and clipping the new plunger on the lever.

    • 8

Insert the plunger into the top of the solenoid, and then reinstall the solenoid. Use the screws that you removed to secure it.

    • 9

Reassemble the dispenser by reversing the steps taken to disassemble it.

    • 10

Restore the refrigerator's water and power supply, then move the refrigerator back into position.
