Regardless of the brand, each water filter is designed to remove naturally occurring minerals from the water supply before it reaches the water dispenser or the ice cube maker. Brita filters use carbon to remove odors, unpleasant tastes and sediment present in some water supplies. Brita filters cannot purify water or remove bacteria.
Brita refrigerator filters are clearly labeled with the name of the brand they are designed to fit. Because Kenmore appliances are made by several companies, including Whirlpool, General Electric and Electrolux, you will find filters designed by other brands also fit your refrigerator. Look for "2230980" on the label of the filter.
The water filter of most Kenmore refrigerators is located in the upper right corner of the fresh food compartment beneath a plastic flip-down cover. When there is no filter installed, a colored bypass plug sits in the filter socket. Pull out the plug or the existing filter and simply slot the Brita into position. You should hear a snap when the filter is properly seated. Run the water dispenser for five minutes into a large container to clear any air in the line.
Water and ice dispensers usually require a water pressure between 35 and 120 pounds per square inch. Adding a water filter to the appliance reduces the water pressure in the water line and, if the pressure is already low, could prevent the ice or water dispensers from working correctly. Brita recommends replacing the water filter roughly every six months or when the replacement light on the control panel of the refrigerator comes on.
