Testing a Frigidaire Adaptive Defrost Controller

Refrigerators that have freezer compartments need defrost devices to keep the amount of built-up frost and ice to a minimum. Some refrigerators, such as a Frigidaire, use adaptive defrost controller devices. These devices control the defrost cycle heater as it automatically turns on and off to thaw the excess frost from the evaporator coils. Test the adaptive defrost controller to manually turn on the defrost cycle when you are worried that the heater is not properly defrosting.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the refrigerator door. Locate the refrigerator's LCD control panel for adjusting the temperature for both the freezer and the fresh food compartments. The location will be based on your make and model of Frigidaire refrigerator.

    • 2

Place a finger on the "Up" key for the freezer temperature control. Hold the key down while pushing five times on the "Down" key for the fresh food temperature control.

    • 3

Look at the LCD screen and wait for the letter "d" to appear for the freezer temperature and the letter "f" to appear for the refrigerator temperature. You have manually activated the defrost heater to test its operation. Perform the same steps to turn off the manual defrost cycle.
