The Bottom Freezer of My GE Profile PFS22MIS Won't Cool

The GE PFS22MIS is a bottom-mount refrigerator unit with the GE ClimateKeeper System and electronic touch temperature controls and display. If the freezer on the unit is not cooling, there are several possible reasons, including a problem with the climate system or the temperature controls.
  1. Power Supply

    • Check to see if the refrigerator section in the GE Profile is cooling. If both sections are not cool and there is no power to the appliance, check the power cord. Ensure it is plugged firmly into a grounded, three-prong electrical outlet. Replace the fuse or reset the circuit breaker if necessary.

    Temperature Controls

    • Look at the temperature control display on the freezer door and turn the freezer temperature down if necessary. The recommended setting for the freezer is 0 degrees Fahrenheit. Press the “Colder” key pad next to the “Freezer Temperature” display repeatedly until the desired temperature is shown on the display. If the control is set to “Off,” the freezer will not cool at all, and setting the freezer at a temperature warmer than 0 degrees F may not cool food as desired.

    Condenser Coils

    • The condenser coils on the refrigerator can build up a covering of dust or lint over time, which causes the system to work less efficiently and cause problems with cooling. Disconnect power to the refrigerator and take the bottom access grill off the front of the refrigerator to access the condenser coils. Clean the coils with a vacuum cleaner brush attachment and then replace the access grill. Finish cleaning the coils on the back of the refrigerator, which are located underneath the fan.

    Freezer Fan and Service

    • Open the freezer and look inside at the back wall. If the wall is covered in ice, there may be a problem with the freezer fan, which cannot be accessed without removing the food items and taking off the back panel of the freezer. If you are confident in your ability to complete this task, disconnect power first, remove all food and ice then take off the back panel. If there is a buildup of ice on the freezer fan, melt the ice with a hairdryer and clean with a dry towel. Reattach the back panel and restore power to the freezer. If the ice returns in a day or two, the fan motor or compressor may need to be replaced. If you don’t feel certain of your ability to disassemble the back panel and inspect the fan, contact GE for service.
