Popping Noise in the Ice Maker of a Samsung Refrigerator

Samsung makes consumer refrigerators with top freezers, side freezers and bottom freezers. Regardless of your specific appliance model or style, you can use the same methods when dealing with a noisy ice maker. Instead of calling for service on the appliance, you can do some troubleshooting on your own.
  1. Newly Installed

    • When you first hook up a refrigerator, you can hear a lot of popping and snapping noises from both the freezer and refrigerator. This happens because the unit is working on cooling for the first time. As this happens, the walls inside the refrigerator and freezer contract and expand, which causes the noise. Give the appliance 24 hours to cool down and the popping noises should stop.

    Stuck Ice Cube

    • When ice gets stuck in the ice maker while it is on, you can hear a popping noise. This is a result of the ice maker trying to make ice when it cannot. You can look in the freezer to determine if there is an ice blockage where the ice cubes eject into the bin. If you do see an ice cube buildup, use a plastic or wooden utensil to dislodge it, which should stop the popping noise.

    Making Ice

    • As the ice maker makes new ice cubes, you can hear a popping noise from the unit. This happens both as the ice is being made and when it falls into the bin. Usually a loud popping noise occurs when the ice is dropped into the ice bin. The popping noise that comes from the ice being made is a softer sound. You can stop these noises by turning off the ice maker.

    Not Level

    • If your refrigerator is not sitting level, then the noise you are hearing from the ice maker might be ice cubes moving around in the ice bin. When the appliance it not level, it can vibrate or shake where it sits. This can result in items inside the appliance rattling. If you have ice cubes in the ice maker bin, they can bounce off the sides can cause the popping noise you are hearing. Level the unit by removing the front leg cover and using a screwdriver to adjust the leg heights.
