My GE Monogram Side-by-Side Compressor Runs Loud

The GE Monogram appliance series includes side-by-side freestanding refrigerators models. The compressor heats up gas so it can expand and boil, cooling off the refrigerator in the process. A working compressor isn’t silent, and there are several normal noises associated with it. Still, if yours seems to run loud, there could be a problem with your unit.
  1. Normal Noises

    • Your GE monogram side-by-side refrigerator’s compressor is supposed to make noise under normal conditions. You may hear a pulsating hum as the compressor cycles on and off. If the electricity to the refrigerator has been off, you may hear a clicking noise when power is restored as the compressor tries to restart itself. This noise can last for three to five minutes normally.

    Seems Loud

    • If your GE Monogram refrigerator seems loud compared to any previous models you’ve owned, that may be normal, too. The newer refrigerators tend to be quieter in general, so the noises you do hear sound louder than normal. The sounds from the compressor can seem loud if the unit is in a large room with high ceilings.

    Obstructions

    • If you’re sure that your refrigerator’s compressor is running loud, there may be an obstruction that’s vibrating when the compressor is on. For example, a pipe could be out of place and resting on the compressor. In this case, you need to access the compressor and check for anything that might be causing the noise. The process can vary depending on the model of your GE Monogram refrigerator.

    Service Calls

    • If your GE Monogram side-by-side refrigerator has a warranty on it, only a certified GE repair technician can diagnose or repair your unit without voiding the warranty. Even if your unit doesn’t have a warranty, you may need the service manual for your model to help you diagnose the problem. In either case, contact GE customer service (1-800-626-2005) for assistance.
