To repair the upright freezer you must disassemble it to gain access to the evaporator fan motor. Prior to beginning the repair, disconnect the freezer's power supply by unplugging it from the electrical outlet or turning off the circuit breaker in your home's service panel the freezer plugs into. If a large amount of food is stored in the freezer, remove it and place it in a cooler. Pack the cooler with ice to keep the food cold to prevent spoilage.
Find the evaporator fan behind the rear wall of the freezer. When running, the fan circulates air around the freezer, ensuring the inside of the freezer maintains a unified temperature. The fan also passes air over the evaporator coils, also found behind the rear panel of the freezer and vital to the freezer's cooling function.
To access the evaporator fan, remove all of the contents from the freezer, including any shelves, drawers and drawer rails. If present in your model, the drawer rails are secured using standard screws and are easily removable. Once the rear panel is accessible from the inside of the freezer, remove the screws securing the panel to the rear of the unit and remove the panel.
After gaining access to the fan, inspect the fan blade. Ensure that no objects, such as a wire, prevent the blade from rotating. Look for damage or cracks on fan blades, which also hinder its performance. If the blade is intact, replace the evaporator fan motor secured using brackets and hex-screws
