How to Disassemble a Double Door Whirlpool Refrigerator

Double-door Whirlpool refrigerators are designed to provide the most storage space for fresh and frozen food. Taking the appliance apart often is the best option when recycling the appliance or moving it to a new location. The doors and shelves sometimes make it difficult to shift the appliance down narrow halls or up stairs. Disassembling a Whirlpool refrigerator is simple using only common household tools.

Instructions

Move the refrigerator forward to access the water supply pipe and power cord. Turn the water shut-off valve, located where the flexible supply pipe meets the plumbing, to the position marked "Off" or "Closed." Run the water dispenser into a large container until it is empty, and empty the ice maker bucket of cubes. Pull the plug from the outlet.

Open the refrigerator and remove all the frozen and fresh food from both compartments. If you have another refrigerator, place the food in its new location immediately. Remove the crisper drawers, door bins and shelves from the freezer and fresh food compartments.

    • 3

Remove only the raised hinge bolts from of the top of the fresh food compartment door while an assistant supports the weight of the door. You might have to remove a plastic cover with a screwdriver to access the bolts on some models. Pull the hinge out of the top of the door while your assistant is supporting the weight. Lift the door off its lower hinge and place it to one side.

Open the freezer door roughly 90 degrees and remove the screws holding the plastic toe grille at the bottom of the appliance in place. Pull the grille off to reveal the water and electrical connections. Pinch the colored rings on the ends of the water connections inward and pull the tubing out. Next, remove the screws holding the wiring clamps in position with a socket wrench. Pull the wiring bundles out and unclip the white connectors. Make sure the wiring and water pipes are not passing through the "O" shaped guide.

Remove the upper hinge of the freezer door while your assistant supports its weight. Lift the door upward and off the appliance, passing the water and electrical cables through the lower hinge. Remove the screws holding the handles in place as well as the metal stops on the bottom of each door.

Make sure the water is off and undo the bolt connecting the flexible water line to the shut-off valve. Roll up the pipe and power cord, and tie both up with zip ties. The appliance is now disassembled and ready to be moved.
