How to Take Apart a Maytag Refrigerator Model MTB2448DRQ

Taking apart and packing up your Maytag MTB2448DRQ is the first step toward moving the appliance out of your kitchen and onto the moving truck or junking it. Homes with narrow doorways, tight passageways and twisting stairwells often require appliances to be taken apart before they can be safely removed. Disassembling your Maytag top-mount refrigerator for transit in advance of your move date will make the process significantly easier and save time come the big day. Disassembling it before junking it will keep curious children from getting trapped inside.

Instructions

    • 1

Pull the refrigerator away from the wall and unplug the power cord.

    • 2

Take out all the food in the refrigerator and freezer compartments -- don't forget the ice cubes. If your refrigerator is hooked up to a water line, close the shut-off valve and unscrew the hose.

    • 3

Empty the appliance of shelves, door bins and crisper drawers if you're moving your refrigerator to a new location. To keep these items safe in transit, wrap them up in bubble wrap or other type of protection. If you're junking your refrigerator, leave the shelves, bins and drawers in place so there will be less space for children to fit into.

    • 4

Pry off the plastic cover over the metal hinge that holds the freezer door in place and remove the bolts with a 5/16-inch socket wrench. Have a friend support the freezer door while you work. Once the bolts are out, pull out the metal hinge and lift the freezer door off its lower hinge.

    • 5

Remove the screw holding the combined bottom freezer hinge and top fresh food hinge and have a friend support the door to the fresh food compartment. Lift the door off its bottom hinge and place it to one side. Remove the bolts holding the final hinge to completely remove the door.

Gather the pieces of the appliance – the doors, drawers, shelves and bins – and wrap everything securely. Moving it is now more manageable -- it's lighter and easier to grip because the doors are off. If necessary, remove the screws holding the door handles to the door.
