GE Profile Refrigerator Is Not Displaying Temperature

Households keeping track of the temperature in a refrigerator ensure adequate food preservation as well as controlling electrical expenses. Many General Electric's Profile family refrigerators display the actual temperature for both the refrigerator and freezer compartments. A single button increases or decreases the temperature using real-time temperatures as a basis. However, the current temperature does not show on the Profile's display indefinitely for all models. Instead, perform preliminary functions to see the actual temperatures, based on your refrigerator type, bottom freezer, side-by-side or top-freezer models.
  1. Bottom-Freezer Refrigerators

    • The control panel on GE Profile side-by-side refrigerators have one of four design styles -- "A," "B," "C" or "D" -- which means the temperature display varies as well. Control Style A is for internal controls, while B, C and D are externally controlled. For Control Styles B and D, pressing the "Warmer" or "Colder" button on the door’s outside displays the actual temperature. For Control Style A, open the refrigerator door and the temperature automatically displays inside the compartment, usually at the top. For Control Style C, press the "Refrigerator" or "Freezer" button on the "Home" screen on the display outside of the refrigerator. Press the "left" or "right" arrow, as if you are about to change the temperature. Press "Enter," and the display shows the current temperature for a few brief seconds. There are some Control Style C models with internal controls. Open the door the see the temperature.

    Side-By-Side Refrigerators

    • GE Appliances uses the terms "LCD Models" and "Non-LCD Models" describing the temperature controls in the side-by-side refrigerators. The LCD models feature a "Home" screen. Press the "Refrigerator" or "Freezer" button, and then press the "left" or "right" arrow. Pressing "Enter" show the actual temperature for a few seconds. For Non-LCD models, press the "Freezer/Temp/Fridge Temp" button. Press the "up" or "down" arrow, as if you are changing the temperature. The display shows the actual temperature for about five seconds.

    Top-Freezer Refrigerators

    • General Electric's top-freezer refrigerators look like other traditional top-freezer brands. However, with some models, the company includes modern LCD and push-button displays inside the refrigerator compartment. Opening both the refrigerator and freezer doors fully exposes the temperature controls on the frame’s outside between both compartment doors. Press the "Warmer" or "Colder" button, and wait for the word "Set" to appear on the display. Press either button just one more time, and then release and wait. Look for the display to show the actual temperature for five seconds.

    Other Considerations and Troubleshooting

    • You can perform basic troubleshooting across most GE Profile refrigerator types fixing temperature and/or display problems. Make sure that the refrigerator has not been manually turned off, indicated by the display showing "Off" or the knob being turned to "O" for off. Carefully pull the refrigerator out from the wall to make sure the power plug is in the wall outlet. Check the fuse box for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker in the circuit breaker box. Periodically, GE refrigerators automatically turn off and enter a self-defrost mode. You might see an orange glow from the heater in the freezer compartment and hear the sizzle of melt water hitting the heating element. Wait about 30 minutes for defrosting to end. It may take another 24 hours for the temperature to stabilize and show the actual measurement.
