How to Change a Door Gasket on a GE Washer

Some front-loading washing machines models produced by General Electric (GE) have thick, rubber, door gaskets intended to prevent water leakage. Over time, the gasket may develop tears and rips, leaving you with a puddle of water and suds on the floor. You don't have to toss out your GE washing machine because of that type of leak. Replacing the gasket is a repair anyone can do with the correct tools, a replacement part and some free time.

Things You'll Need

  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flat-head screwdriver

Unplug the GE washing machine from its electrical outlet.

    • 2

Remove the three screws at the top and back of the machine. Remove the three screws at the top, near the washer's door, that hold the trim in place. Take off the trim. Slide the top, and lift it from the washer. Slide out the detergent drawer, which is at the upper left side of the washing machine.

Unscrew the two screws inside the soap dispenser, which should be empty. Remove the two screws at the front and top of the washer. Reach inside the soap dispenser, and locate the two clips that hold the control panel. Press those two clips to release the control panel.

Unscrew the four screws holding the door in place. Remove the door, and locate the rubber boot that holds two hoses. Disconnect the two hoses from the boot. Lift the drum slightly while removing the screw in the boot's clamp. Remove the boot.

Pry off the old gasket by using a flat-head screwdriver. Remove the gasket completely. Look for a small notch on the new gasket. Align the notch with the directional arrow located at the top of the drum or tub. Stretch and pull the gasket over the door frame, using the notch and directional arrow as guides.

Replace the boot, and reconnect the hoses. Reassemble the washer in reverse order of how you took it apart. As you work, make every screw tight and not crooked.
