How to Light a Sears Classic Top Oven

The Sears Classic Top Oven was manufactured under the Kenmore brand in the 1940s. The oven is now considered a vintage appliance. It ran off gas and had a pilot light that had to be manually lit for operation. Often times the pilot light would go out, which would cause the oven not to work. Because the oven was one of the first gas ranges by Kenmore, there were hazards with the pilot light operation.
  1. Description

    • The pilot light inside the classic oven has a continual flame. This means that when the pilot light is lit there is a blue flame. If the flame goes out, there is a distinguishable odor of rotten eggs. The odor is an additive in the gas to make it noticeable to the consumer. Under normal conditions, gas is odorless and colorless, and would be difficult to identify.

    Pilot Light

    • In order to light the pilot light, you must first turn off the gas to the oven. A valve connects the gas to the stove. Open the oven door and pull up the bottom of the stove. Under the floor of the oven you will find the pilot light. Wipe the pilot light with a clean, dry cloth and turn the gas back on. Use a long match to light the pilot light by holding the match above the pilot light until it holds a small blue flame.

    Cooking

    • Once the pilot light has been lit, you are ready to cook in the oven. Gas heat provides a greater range of temperature control allowing items cook evenly and quickly. There is no need to allow the oven to heat up because the flame is instantly warm when you turn the oven on. This lessens the need to allow the oven to pre-heat before you begin baking, though many baking items require you to pre-heat the oven for a given amount of time before cooking.

    Dangers

    • Older appliances, especially vintage ones, often come with certain hazards. Carbon monoxide poisoning is the most common problem. Every time a gas oven is used it emits carbon monoxide. In low doses, carbon monoxide exposure can cause headache, dizziness and even fainting. The oven should never be left unattended because of the risk of fire, and the oven should never be used as a source of heat. It is important to always use the oven as suggested and follow all safety precautions.
