How to Install an Airtight Wood Stove Catalytic Combustor

The catalytic combustor helps an airtight stove give off the desired amount of heat while operating at a lower temperature, and prevents excessive amounts of smoke. The catalytic combustor recycles the smoke, re-burns it along with the wood, and then allows it to pass cleaner smoke through the chimney. Replace the combustor if there is much more smoke leaving the stove than usual, the stove is not heating efficiently or is taking a long time to warm up. Turn off the stove and let it cool down before you inspect the combustor. Inspect the catalytic combustor regularly for cracks or deterioration. Get a replacement catalytic combustor that is made to fit your stove for an airtight seal.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the access door in the wood stove and lift it up to pull it out from the stove. The access door is a plate with a hole in the middle.

    • 2

Remove the inner fireback by lifting it up and pulling it out from the stove. The inner fireback is a long flat plate with a side that bends upward and a ridge down the middle of the plate. Removing the inner fireback provides access to the catalytic combustor.

    • 3

Slide the catalytic combustor toward you while raising it out from the stove. The catalytic combustor has a mesh screen that looks like honeycomb and it is surrounded by a metal frame.

    • 4

Vacuum out any debris inside of the stove while you have all of the items removed.

    • 5

Insert the new catalytic combustor into the stove by sliding it back into the stove and lowering it down into its place. The catalytic combustor should not move around if in place properly.

    • 6

Replace the inner fireback first and then replace the access door.
