How to Modify an Electric Leaf Blower

Modifying an electric leaf blower to extend its range or to create new opportunities to use it is only limited by your imagination and a few easy-to-make plastic additions for the nozzle. For example, clean leaves from your gutters the fast way with a nozzle extension on the leaf blower. Your feet stay on the ground, while the forced air blasts the leaves away. Or, make compost tea without the need too purchase an aerator or to endlessly stir the tea to prevent it from turning anaerobic.

Things You'll Need

  • PVC pipe sized in diameter to fit over your blower nozzle, approximately 3 to 4 inches in length
  • Duct tape
  • PVC step down coupling to connect the pipe over the nozzle to a 1 1/2-inch-diameter pipe
  • Length of 1-1/2-inch-diameter PVC pipe to reach from chest height to gutter
  • 1-inch section of 1 1/2-inch-diameter PVC pipe
  • 2 PVC right angle connectors
  • 24-inch section of 4-inch-diameter PVC pipe
  • 4-inch PVC end connector, 2 each
  • Drill with 1/4-inch-diameter bits

Instructions

  1. Gutter Blower

    • 1

Place the PVC pipe over your nozzle and push it up the nozzle as far as it will go. Duct tape the PVC pipe to the nozzle at the upper end of the pipe to avoid it slipping off and the loss of any forced air through a leak.

    • 2

Push the right angle connector on to the end of the long 1 1/2-inch pipe. Set the 1-inch-long section into the other opening of the connector, and then set the second right angle connector into that, giving you a square looking "J" shape on the end of the pipe. This is the end of the pipe that will set over the guttering.

    • 3

Push the step-down connector onto the end of the pipe coming from the nozzle, and then push the end of the longer pipe with the J-hook onto the step-down connector. This allows you to blow the air through the pipe with the J-hook set over the gutter edge.

    Compost Tea Blower

    • 4

Cut a hole into one PVC end connector sized to allow the first inch of the blower nozzle to fit through. Attach both ends to the 4-inch-diameter PVC tube, making an enclosed cylinder. Designate the end with the nozzle hole as the top and the other end as the bottom.

    • 5

Drill about 20 holes into the PVC pipe in the bottom 12 inches of its length. Distribute the holes evenly around the pipe.

    • 6

Place the cylinder into the the compost tea bucket, with the holes completely into the water. Set the tip of the nozzle into the hole at the top of the cylinder. Turn the blower on at its lowest speed until the water becomes agitated from the air blowing through the multiple holes. Add more speed to the air until it reaches the point where the tea is beginning to spill from the bucket, and then back off the speed just a little. Keep blowing the tea for four to five minutes to completely aerate it for that day. One treatment a day is enough to keep your tea fresh and aerobic.
