Reverse Osmosis Water Filter Installation

Reverse osmosis water filtration is the process by which water passes through a system of membranes, thereby removing chemicals, particles and minerals from the water. The membrane system typically consists of several canisters installed underneath a kitchen cabinet and the filtered water dispenses from a separate faucet next to or on the sink. Installing a reverse osmosis water filtration system may take a few hours, but most homeowners can accomplish the task fairly easily.

Instructions

  1. Assembly

    • 1

Turn off the cold water supply valve underneath the sink where the reverse osmosis water filter is to be placed. Disconnect the tubing from the cold water supply valve to the cold-water riser.

    • 2

Connect the included feed water adapter matching the plumbing size, 1/2- or 3/8-inch diameter. Tighten gently with an adjustable wrench; do not overtighten.

    • 3

Attach the faucet tubing line into the coupling, add the gasket and then attach the adapter that fits into the cold water supply valve.

    • 4

Use an existing soap dispenser hole or sink spray attachment location for the reverse osmosis faucet, or drill a hole 1 1/4 inches in diameter, using the appropriate bit for your sink or countertop material.

    • 5

Place the reverse osmosis faucet spout into the faucet body and tighten clockwise until firmly connected.

    • 6

Pull the two black tubes -- one is 1/4 inch and one is 3/8 inch -- and the blue tubes up through the hole on the sink surface. Continue to feed the two black tubes through the gasket, the base of the faucet and the O-ring. Connect the black tubes into the corresponding barb fittings on the base of the faucet.

    • 7

Connect the faucet base and the body together, keeping the O-ring and the gasket in position while connecting the two. Turn clockwise until the handle sits at a 3 o’clock position to the base.

    • 8

Connect the lock washer onto the body threaded stem, and then connect the brass nut onto the stem, turning until it's approximately halfway up. Attach the tubing adapter to the threaded stem and then push the blue tube into the adapter about 1/2 inch. Tighten the tubing and then pull gently to ensure the tubing is firmly attached.

    • 9

Pull down on the tubing and the stem to feed through the 1 1/4-inch hole. Reach under the sink and connect the mounting disk on top of the lock washer. Tighten with an adjustable wrench until firm.

    • 10

Install the included drain line adapter under the sink on the opposite side of the disposer, taking care not to install the drain line adapter downstream from the garbage disposer. Connect the 3/8 inch black tubing from the faucet air gap to the drain line adapter drain fitting and straighten out the tubing to prevent any obstructions to the drain line. Cut the tubing if necessary to create a straight line of tubing from the faucet to the drain.

    • 11

Pull the 1/4-inch yellow tubing from the reverse osmosis water filter inlet to the feed water adapter and connect the tubing together, securing the nut firmly with an adjustable wrench.

    • 12

Place the reverse osmosis tank assembly up against the wall surface underneath the sink where you want the assembly installed and mark the screw locations. Note the arrows on the bracket top that indicate the screw hole locations. Attach the screws and then hang the assembly on the screws.

    • 13

Wrap pipe thread sealing tape to the tank fitting and connect to the tank threads. Tighten with an adjustable wrench. Run the 3/8 inch orange tubing from the side of the reverse osmosis assembly and connect to the storage tank inlet fitting.

    Preparing the Filtration System

    • 14

Wash your hands with antibacterial soap. Dry your hands and then turn off the water supply connected to the reverse osmosis system.

    • 15

Turn on the reverse osmosis water faucet and wait for the tank to drain completely, which may take several minutes. Turn off the faucet and carefully disconnect the sumps, which are the round connectors on top of each of the canisters. Note that the sumps may be full of water.

    • 16

Throw away the filters and wash out the sumps with dishwashing liquid and water, wiping the inside of the heads with a clean cloth. Rinse sumps well.

    • 17

Unscrew the cap from the reverse osmosis cartridge housing and pull the cartridge out with a pair of pliers. Set the cartridge in a clean plastic bag while you wipe the inside of the cap and housing with soapy water and then rinse well.

    • 18

Replace the empty post filter sump and fill with water until the level is about 1 inch away from the O-ring. Add 2 ounces of household bleach and replace the prefilter sump.

    • 19

Turn on the water supply and open the reverse osmosis faucet until the water starts to flow. Close the reverse osmosis faucet and wait for one minute while the system fills.

    • 20

Open the faucet and let the water flow for 10 minutes, then close the faucet for one minute. Open again and allow the water to flow for 10 more minutes, or until you no longer smell bleach. Turn off the water supply and let the reverse osmosis water tank drain.

    • 21

Take out the sumps and insert new filters. Apply a thin layer of food-grade silicon grease to the O-ring and then tighten the sumps into place. Disconnect the cap from the reverse osmosis cartridge housing and install the cartridge after lubricating the O-ring with food-grade silicon grease. Place the O-ring end in first.

    • 22

Turn on the water supply and allow the entire system to fill, which may take up to four hours. Watch occasionally for leaks and tighten connections as necessary.

    • 23

Open the battery compartment on the filter change indicator and install the included battery, following the indicators to align the battery terminals correctly. Push the battery in firmly and close the battery cover.
