How to Install a Gas Stove Top in Front of a Window

A gas stove top is not commonly found in front of a window because most gas tops have a hood for ventilation. However, you can install a downdraft gas stove top in front of a window without a hood vent. The installation process is no different than installing a gas stove top anywhere else in your kitchen, but you do need to have a gas line and electrical outlet already in place to support the gas stove top. If you are replacing an existing stove top, be sure to purchase a stove top of the same dimensions to avoid having to adjust your counter top cutout.

Instructions

    • 1

Have an assistant turn and hold the new stove top on its side while you line the metal flange’s perimeter with double-sided tape. The tape should be applied about 1/4-inch from the rim of the stove. Only pull off the adhesive sticker from one side of the tape at this time.

    • 2

Apply a thick coat of pipe-joint compound sealer around the rim of the regulator valve then screw it onto the gas line pipe nipple located on the bottom side of the stove top.

    • 3

Add another thick coat of pipe-joint compound sealer around the rim of the gas line that came with the stove.

    • 4

Screw the gas line to the gas regulator valve on the bottom of the stove top. Secure the connection with a wrench.

    • 5

Peel away the adhesive sticker on the double-sided tape then lower the stove top into place in the counter cutout. Let the gas line enter first so that it is not caught between the stove and the counter top.

    • 6

Open the cabinet doors under the stove top and install the two clamp brackets. Slide the angled end of the brackets into the slots along the side of the stove. Insert the thumbscrew upward into the hole in the bracket then turn the thumbscrew until it is snug against the bottom side of the counter top.

    • 7

Apply another thick coat of pipe-joint compound sealer along the free end of the gas line. Connect the gas line to the gas valve from your home and tighten the connection with the wrench.

    • 8

Plug the power cord into the electrical outlet then turn on the gas supply valve.

    • 9

Squirt liquid dish soap into a spray bottle, add water and mix the solution up. Spray the gas line connection with the soapy water and observe if there are any bubbles. If you see bubbles, turn the gas supply off and tighten the connection. If you do not see any bubbles, the connection is secure.
