Should I Use Blade Wash After My Blades Have Been Sharpened?

Hairstylists, dog groomers and others use Oster's Blade Wash to keep their clippers clean. Sharpened blades go dull more quickly if you don’t keep them clean, no matter what type of clipper you use. So, you should use Blade Wash or another cleaner to keep your blades clean and sharp, unless manufacturers’ instructions indicate otherwise.
  1. Blade Wash

    • Oster instructs users to immerse clipper blades in its cleaner while the clipper is running to remove debris caught in the blades. The blades then need to be wiped dry with the clipper turned off to prevent the blades from rusting. Avoid leaving blades in any cleaner for long periods because they might begin to rust.

    Dirty Blades

    • Dirty blades tend to drag and pull at hair, preventing clippers from creating a smooth cut. The longer the blades continue to function that way, the more likely they are to become dull. Therefore, keeping your blades clean cuts down on the number of times they need sharpening.

    Overheating

    • Using Blade Wash to keep sharpened blades clean also can prevent clippers from breaking down. Dirt and debris trapped between the blades cause the blades to tighten while they're in use. Clippers work harder when their blades tighten up, and that could cause clippers to overheat. You might have to repair or replace clippers that overheat.

    Considerations

    • The debris that builds up on clipper blades contains bacteria. So, keeping sharpened blades clean also helps reduce bacteria growth. Oster indicates that its Blade Wash cleans and lubricates clipper blades. Some professional blade sharpeners warn against relying solely on cleaning solutions to keep clippers lubricated, especially when they’re used frequently. You should follow manufacturers' instructions. However, lubricating clippers usually involves squeezing a few drops of blade oil on the blades while the clipper is running. With the clipper turned off, excess oil is wiped off the blades.
