Clean the broken surfaces. Use your fingers and a soft paintbrush to remove all dust, debris and broken pieces too small to cement back into place. If left on the broken surfaces, these could keep the cement from adhering correctly.
Dampen the area to be repaired. Mix 1 drop of liquid dish-washing soap to 1 cup of water in a spray bottle. Lightly spray the broken area of the kiln bricks. The soap reduces the water's surface tension and makes it easier for the bricks to absorb moisture. Also moisten any loose broken pieces you intend to cement back into place.
Apply cement. Use a small trowel or putty knife to apply a thin coating of liquid kiln repair cement to the broken area and any loose pieces of brick.
Replace broken pieces. Press any loose pieces of firebrick back into their holes, matching the broken surfaces as well as possible. Hold the brick pieces in place for a few seconds, until the cement begins to stick. Allow the cement to dry for an hour before firing the kiln.
Fill in low spots. If the broken area cannot be filled with loose pieces, mix 1 part kaolin grog with 1 part cement. Use this material as a filler so that the cement matches the expansion ratio of the firebrick. Smooth this material with a trowel or putty knife and allow to dry at least one hour.
