How to Install a Gas Log Set in a Wood Burning Fireplace

Converting a wood-burning fireplace to a gas fireplace can be a cleaner, more efficient way of heating a room or providing ambiance. Gas fireplace inserts allow you to do just that. Installing a gas log set is the final part of the installation process for a gas insert. Gas log sets are artificial wood pieces designed to withstand years of hot temperatures without burning. Gas logs are installed on top of the burner element inside the gas insert.

  Pull down on the two tabs on top of the fireplace glass. Gently pull forward on the tabs to remove the front glass panel.

  Identify the log marked "L" or "Left" by the stamped information on the bottom of the log. Align the holes on the bottom of the left log with the pin studs on the left side of the log support rails inside the fireplace.

  Place the right log marked "R" or "Right" on the pin studs on the right side of the fireplace gas insert.

  Identify the locator notches on the tops of the left and right logs. Place the front log on top of the left and right logs so that the base of the log aligns with the notches.

  Remove the ember material from the bag and scatter it in the front area of the logs. The embers will glow red but not burn when the flame is turned on.

  Replace the glass front and secure it with the tabs on top.
