How to Replace Kohler Points

Kohler manufactures engines for a wide range of commercial and personal use equipment including lawn mowers, tractors and go-carts. The engines include an ignition, plus breaker points that combine to act as a type of electrical switch to power the equipment on. Normal use causes the points to wear over time. If you're having a hard time turning on your Kohler equipment, you may have worn or bad points that must be replaced.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the cover of your equipment to access the engine. Reference the user guide of your Kohler equipment to determine the exact instructions on how to remove the cover. To remove the cover on a push lawn mower, for example, locate and remove the shoulder screws on the front drive cover to the deck of your mower. Press the sides of the cover to release the tabs securing the cover; pull the cover off and set it aside.

Disconnect the negative battery terminal by loosening the clamp with a wrench. Pull the terminal off of the battery to remove the charge.

Pry the distributor caps off of the distributor using a flathead screwdriver. The distributor is located on the top front of the engine.

    • 4

Lift the rotor out of the distributor shaft to access the distributor.

    • 5

Remove the nuts from the old points on the distributor using a wrench.

    • 6

Wipe down the distributor with a clean cloth to remove any dirt before inserting the new points.

    • 7

Insert the new points on the distributor and secure them into place using nuts and the wrench.

    • 8

Place the rotor back into the distributor shaft.

    • 9

Attach the caps over the distributor to hold the distributor in place.
