How to Rewire a Freezer

Freezers normally have a pretty long life, but if you find yourself with a freezer full of rapidly melting ice cream, you'll want to fix the appliance as soon as possible. Two of the major components in freezers that fail are the service cords and compressors. Rewiring a freezer to replace or repair these components is within the scope of a do-it-yourself job.

Instructions

    • 1

Unplug the freezer. Move the freezer far enough from the wall for you to access the service panel at the rear.

    • 2

Use a screwdriver to remove the service panel.

    • 3

Loosen the black and white wires from the terminal board that connect to the service cord. Follow the green wire adjacent to the black and white wires to where it connects to the freezer cabinet. Loosen the screw and remove the green cord.

    • 4

Loosen the terminal screws on each connection and pull off the old service cord. Wire a new service cord in place of the old one. If needed, trim the end of the cord with wire strippers.

    • 5

Connect the compressor to the relay and the power supply. Connect the white wire from the compressor to the common white power supply wire, which is usually connected to a bus bar or circuit board. Connect the red wire on the compressor to the relay, the squarish shaped object next to the compressor.

    • 6

Replace the service panel and secure it with the service panel screws.

    • 7

Plug the freezer back into the electrical outlet. Return the freezer to its original location.
