How to Build Your Own Expandable Clothes Dryer for a Wall

Laundry day is problematic when rain or snow prevent you from hanging your wet laundry outside. Even on nice days, an expandable clothes dryer hung on the laundry room or garage wall saves time and energy. Simply push the bracket up, snapping it into place and then flip the clothes dryer frame out to hang your laundry.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the wall studs with a stud finder. Mark the center point of each stud with a pencil, 60 inches from the floor. Wall studs are usually 16 inches apart, from the center to center point.

    • 2

Mark the folding shelf brackets' mounting holes, 32 inches apart on the wall and aligned on the center of the studs. Use a spirit level to ensure that the brackets are horizontal.

    • 3

Predrill the mounting holes into the wall studs. Screw the brackets to the wall with 4-inch screws.

    • 4

Measure and mark every 3 inches along the 15-inch boards, centered on the 2 1/2-inch side of the boards. Drill a 1/4-inch hole through the board at each mark.

    • 5

Arrange the 2-by-3 boards into two 15-by-33-inch rectangles, with the 1 1/2-inch sides up. Butt the ends of the 30-inch boards against the sides of the 15-inch boards. Predrill through the 15-inch sides and into the ends of the 30-inch boards. Screw together with 3-inch screws.

    • 6

Lay the two rectangles side-by-side with the 33-inch sides together. Attach together with the three hinges using the enclosed screws, spaced equidistant along the length of the rectangles.

    • 7

Fold the shelf bracket up and lock into position. Fold the two rectangles together and place on top of the bracket, with the hinges facing out.

    • 8

Pull the folded rectangles 1/16 inch out from the wall. Screw through the bottom of the shelf bracket and into the bottom rectangle with 1 3/4-inch screws.

    • 9

Fold the top rectangle out. Starting at the back corner, insert and tie clothesline cord at the first hole. Pull it snugly across the frame, parallel to the wall and insert through the first hole on the opposite side.

    • 10

Wrap the cord around the frame and insert it through the second hole on the same side. Pull the cord back across the length of the frame to the second hole on the other side. Tie the cord in a knot before pulling it to the third hole. Continue installing the cord tightly onto the frame, tying it at every other row to secure the clothesline.

    • 11

Fold the clothesline frame up, then fold the shelf bracket down. Install a latch onto the upper side of the folding wood framework. This will hold the clothes dryer up when it's not in use.
