How to Connect a Water Softener Using Push Fittings

Water softening systems are employed to reduce the heavy ion content in a water supply. This water softening has many benefits that extend the life of other appliances, such as dishwashers and washing machines. Push fittings offer health-conscious alternatives to traditionally soldered metal connections. Connecting a water softening system via push fittings removes the potential for lead contamination in water and allows for quick system removal when desired.

Locate the opening of the water input pipe. This pipe carries water from the currently installed water system to the water softener.

    • 2

Install a pipe fitting onto the open end of the input and output pipe. The metal end of the pipe fitting slides over the existing pipe. Once it is in place, turn the metal pipe fitting collar and tighten it with a wrench.

    • 3

Install a push fitting onto each tube end now attached to the input and output pipes. Push the open end of the pipe fitting tube all the way into the push fitting. Pull back gently on the tubing once it is completely inserted. The push fitting will automatically engage and firmly seal around the tubing. Repeat this process for the output tubing.

    • 4

Connect the push fitting's metal collar to the input and output connectors on the water softening system.

Test the system for leaks by allowing a small amount of water to pass completely through the system. If no leaks are observed, the system is ready for service.
