How to Connect a Vent-Free Fireplace System

A vent-free fireplace system uses faux logs connected to a natural gas or propane gas line. A vent-free fireplace burns efficiently at high temperatures that minimize combustion and exhaust gases to a safe level for burning indoors. This allows such a system to operate without venting or connection to a chimney. You can install a vent-free fireplace in virtually any room with a working gas connection and an electrical outlet to power the ignition.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the fireplace system in the desired spot in the room, typically facing the seating area, such as a sofa and chairs. Follow the placement guidelines for your particular model. Some vent-free systems can be placed directly against a wall. others require a minimum clearance distance, usually 18 inches. These factors depend on the heating power and size of the system.

    • 2

Push the coupler on the end of the gas line in the room onto the nozzle at the back of the fireplace system. The nozzle is typically connected to a short length of hose for flexibility in connecting to the main line.

    • 3

Twist the connection a half-turn clockwise if it's to a natural gas line, tightening with the adjustable wrench. Turn the coupler clockwise as far as it will rotate if you're hooking up a propane gas system.

    • 4

Mix liquid soap and water in a spray bottle and shake it to create suds.

    • 5

Open the valve in the gas line in the room. A natural gas valve has a lever that turns parallel to the line to release gas. Propane gas valves have a knob that twists counterclockwise.

    • 6

Spray the foamy soap water on the connection between the residential gas line and the fireplace unit. Look for bubbling and listen for a hissing sound or the odor of gas. If you detect any of these signs, close the main gas valve and repeat the connection. Test again until there is no longer evidence of a leak.

Plug in the fireplace unit's power cord to a standard wall outlet for electricity to operate the ignition system.
