DIY Set Water Softener Timer

A water softener timer activates the equipment at predetermined intervals, such as every three days, to start a regeneration cycle of removing minerals and other impurities from the water. Setting the digital timer is no more complicated than programming an alarm clock. Before you can set the timer, you'll need to calculate how often the water softener equipment should run a regeneration cycle. This is based on your daily water consumption and the capacity of the water softener system. No special tools are needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Calculate how much water you use in a day, based on depletion in the water softener tank. For example, your household might use 400 gallons per day.

    • 2

Divide the capacity of the water softener -- which is measured in grains and printed on the tank or listed in the owner's manual -- by the daily water usage. For example, if the water softener is rated for 1,600 grains and daily water usage is 400 gallons, divide 1,600 by 400 to get 4. The timer should be set to activate the water softener every 4 days.

Press the timer button on the control panel for the water softener. Press the up or down arrow key to set the selected time for starting a regeneration cycle. On some models, you may also be required to press a "Set" or "Enter" key to complete the programming.
