My 150,000 BTU Reddy Heater Won't Spark

The 150,000 BTU Reddy heater is a propane, forced-air model designed for outdoor use. The heater requires at least a 4 ½-square-foot opening for ventilation when the heater is in use and should be kept away from pets, children and any chemicals or flammable products. Starting the heater is relatively simple, but if the Reddy heater will not spark, some basic troubleshooting may be needed.

Things You'll Need

  • Air pressure gauge
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Can of compressed air
  • Socket wrench
  • New rubber seal washer

Instructions

    • 1

Make sure the Reddy heater is plugged into a working power outlet. Reset the circuit breaker if needed.

    • 2

Gradually turn the propane valve clockwise to shut the valve off and then slowly turn the valve counterclockwise to open the propane valve again. Check that there is propane in the tank and refill or replace the tank if needed.

    • 3

Insert an air pressure gauge on the rear of the air filter. Turn on the Reddy heater and adjust the air pressure to 3.4 psi, which is the recommended air pressure for a 150,000 BTU unit. Use a flat head screwdriver to turn the adjustment screw clockwise if the pressure needs to be increased or counterclockwise if you want to decrease the pressure. Remove the screwdriver and repeat the air pressure gauge test until the reading is 3.4 psi.

Remove the burner head from the heater if the unit still does not spark. Use a socket wrench to take the nozzle from the burner head carefully and take the rubber seal washer off the nozzle stem. Blow through the nozzle with a can of compressed air to remove debris.

Place a new rubber seal, available through Reddy Heaters, on the nozzle stem and check to ensure the seal washer, spring and second seal washer are positioned correctly on the nozzle. Replace the nozzle on the burner head.
