Range Oven Ratings

For many, major appliance shopping is a thrill. It’s an opportunity to see the latest and greatest and to touch and compare before narrowing the list of options to one. Some decisions are dictated by the space, such as gas versus electric or combo versus wall unit. The chore of comparing the brands and models is much harder. Simplify this task before you shop with advice and ratings from marketing and consumer watch groups.
  1. Good Housekeeping

    • The Good Housekeeping Research Institute has been helping consumers sort the good from the not-so-good since 1900. Good Housekeeping ratings are based on in-house testing, research and consumer surveys. The GHRI is staffed by engineers, scientists, nutritionists and researchers. Reviews of tested products are published under the Product Reviews section of GoodHousekeeping.com. The product reviews list the top brands according to test results along with features, price and advice for selecting the best range.

    Cooking Connect

    • Cooking Connect does not perform independent testing. Instead, the company collects and publishes product reviews provided by people who have purchased and used the products. Chefs, food specialists and individuals submit product reviews. Currently, Cooking Connect has reviews for Whirlpool, Bosch, Frigidaire, Kenmore, GE and LG ranges.

    J.D. Power and Associates

    • Established in 1968, J.D. Power and Associates, a unit of McGraw-Hill, collects, analyzes and publishes information related to product satisfaction and buying behavior. J.D. Power and Associates conducts telephone, mail and email surveys of actual product owners or users. The company publishes a mini report of research findings and ratings online at JDPowers.com. Products are rated using the Power Circle Ratings system. All ratings are based on actual user experiences and opinions. A high circle rating indicates other consumers had a positive experience with the product. In the “2011 Home Appliance Study: Range/Cooktop/Oven,” J.D. Powers rated several brands, including Amana, Bosch, Electrolux, Frigidaire, Kenmore and GE in the categories of overall satisfaction, ease of use, performance and reliability, and styling and appearance.

    Consumer Reports

    • Since 1936, Consumer Reports, a nonprofit testing entity, has vigorously tested and researched products in its National Testing and Research Center. Consumer Reports employs more than 100 testing experts and 150 anonymous shoppers located throughout the U.S. Product ratings are based on extensive research, in-house product testing and surveys of millions of product users. Consumer Reports tested and rated more than 66 gas and electric oven ranges in the categories of baking and broiling, low- and high-heat cooking, oven capacity and cleaning and convection abilities. To access product ratings, individuals must purchase an online subscription to ConsumerReports.org.
