Problem With My Glow-Worm Gas Boiler Popping Loudly When It Ignites

The Glow-Worm gas boiler offers home heating as well as water heating and has one-way wiring connections, automatic self-check and a two-year limited parts and labor warranty. If the boiler is making a loud popping noise when the boiler ignites, some troubleshooting and/or possible repair is needed.
  1. Gas Supply

    • The gas supply may be limited, which is causing the loud popping sound when the Glow-Worm boiler tries to ignite. Check the gas supply valve to make sure the valve is completely open. Stop immediately if gas is detected and turn off the boiler power. Leave the home and contact the local gas company for assistance.

    Expansion and Contraction

    • Another possible source of the noise is the sudden expansion of the pipes as the heat enters and then cools down. The pipes may be rubbing against the housing structure when expanded from the heat, which can make a popping sound. Open the air valve on the household radiators to bleed the air out and release the pressure in the pipes.

    Sediment

    • A buildup of sediment in the bottom of the boiler can cause a popping noise when the boiler ignites as the sediment causes a rapid buildup of steam in the boiler, which creates noise. Disconnect power to the boiler, turn off the water supply and then close the isolating valve on the Glow-Worm boiler by turning clockwise until firm. Place a large bucket underneath the drain port beneath the pump, open the drain port and the pressure valve and turn the spigot open to drain the water. Wait until the water drains completely and then close the spigot. Turn on the water supply and allow the boiler to refill. Empty out the bucket and replace the bucket under the surface blow-down valve and open the valve to allow any other sediment to drain out. Close the valve and restore power.

    Corrosion or Rust

    • Open the access panel on the Glow-Worm boiler and look inside at the pilot light. If the flame is yellow, uneven, or there are any signs of a leak, corrosion or rust, turn off the boiler. Contact Glow-Worm immediately for service, as there might be a carbon monoxide or gas leak and the boiler should be inspected for damage.
