My Oven Is Stuck On

Depending on your oven's age and model, the oven should power on with the touch of a button or the turn of a knob. The same controls also turn the oven off, which keeps the appliance from overheating or significantly raising the temperature in the kitchen. If your oven is stuck in the on position, it likely indicates a problem with the knobs or control settings.
  1. Not Turned Off

    • If you have an older oven, the temperatures and settings have a knob control. One reason why the oven might stay turned on is because you did not properly turn the knob. The knob should click into place, which sends a message through the device to turn the power off. A problem can also occur when the knobs are loose and do not turn properly. Try moving the knob clockwise, then counterclockwise and waiting until you hear a soft click. The click indicates that the oven registered the change and it should turn off.

    Keep Warm Settings

    • For electronic ovens or ovens with electronic controls, check for a “Keep Warm” function. Frigidaire offers this control, which keeps the oven at a low temperature to keep your food hot until you remove it from the appliance. Press the button on the oven or turn the knob to the warming position. Wait a few seconds for the oven to register the new command and turn the oven to the off setting again. This may force the oven to turn itself off.

    Timer Problems

    • Most newer ovens feature a timer setting that lets you control how long a dish cooks and the temperature of the oven. It is possible to accidentally press the timer button without realizing it. Even if you do not enter a time setting, the oven still registers that you used the function. Examine the oven for a “Cancel” or “Stop” button. Press the button down and hold for a few seconds. Release and wait until the oven shuts itself down.

    Warning

    • If all else fails, turn off the power to the oven. Your home should run on a circuit breaker or use individual fuses. For a circuit breaker system, locate the circuit to the kitchen. Turn the breaker off for five seconds and flip back on. If you have a fuse system, remove the fuse from the fuse box, wait five seconds and insert back into the place. As soon as the oven stops getting power, it turns off.
