Kenmore Trash Compactor Is Stuck in the Down Position

Kenmore trash compactors compress trash in order to reduce the amount of trash bags necessary to remove trash from the home. The compactor is operated with a foot pedal to allow hands to remain free but if the compactor gets stuck in the down position, some troubleshooting might be needed.
  1. Trash Compactor Operation

    • The Kenmore trash compactor operates with the use of a compressor that presses down on the trash when the compactor drawer is shut and the unit is turned on. The force of the compactor reduces trash to approximately one-fourth of the original size of the trash.

    Loading

    • Loading the Kenmore compactor properly is important for proper operation, as overfilling or under filling the compactor can cause the controls to get stuck. Fill the compactor slightly more than half full before closing the drawer and starting the compression.

    Bottles and Cans

    • When placing trash containing bottles or cans in the trash compactor, place the bottles or cans in the center of the compactor drawer instead of the sides. This helps prevent the bottles or cans from getting caught between the sides of the drawer and the compressor, which causes the compactor to get stuck in the down position or fail to compress the trash.

    Wet Items

    • Cover damp or wet items with other dry trash before placing the trash in the compactor and starting the compactor, as wet items can get caught on the compressor. This will cause the compactor to get stuck while operating.

    Reset

    • If the compactor remains stuck in the down position, turn the control clockwise to “On” and release. The compactor should compress and then stop operation. Make sure the compactor drawer is completely closed and the foot pedal is released. Disconnect power to the trash compactor if the control remains stuck and then restore power. Contact Kenmore if the problem persists.
