How to Use a Kill Switch on a Furnace

All modern furnaces are equipped with a kill switch. This kill switch is a simple device that cuts of the furnace's power supply. A properly functioning kill switch will automatically shut off if the furnace is operating dangerously or improperly. One of the most commonly overlooked home maintenance tasks is the kill switch test. At least once annually, turn your kill switch on and off to make sure that the furnace is operating safely. If the kill switch fails to respond, contact a qualified furnace repair technician.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the kill switch. On most furnace models, the kill switch is located near the power supply cord's point of entry on the furnace's exterior.

    • 2

Press the kill switch to the "off" position. A functioning kill switch will stop the furnace's operation immediately.

    • 3

Press the kill switch to the "on" position. A functioning kill switch will stop the furnace's operation immediately.
