How to Test if a Gas Cooktop Regulator is Good

The regulator on your gas cooktop monitors the pressure coming from your home's gas line. The regulator ensures that the line is not pushing too much fuel into the cooktop, which could be extremely hazardous and cause a gas leak. Most homes that use gas will also have a regulator on the gas tank as well, but it is still important that the cooktop’s regulator functions properly. Testing the regulator only takes a few minutes and you can obtain an answer immediately.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the gas valve that runs to your cooktop.

    • 2

Remove the cap on the regulator. Depending on your cooktop, the location of the regulator and the cap on the regulator may vary. Look at your owner’s manual to find the exact location of the regulator. The regulator will have one line running through it that supplies the gas and a cap closing off another available line connection.

Push the “On/Off” button on the manometer to power it on, and then view the screen. The screen should read “0” if it is properly calibrated. If it is not, recalibrate it by venting the two inlet ports. To vent the ports, remove the two hoses by pulling them off, and then allow the vents to remain in the open air. Push the “Zero/Store” button and wait for the screen to read “0.”

    • 4

Connect the positive hose line from your manometer to the inlet line on the regulator where you removed the cap. The negative hose on the manometer should not connect to anything.

    • 5

Turn the gas valve for the cooktop back on and read the manometer’s display screen. The manometer will test the regulator. If the regulator is working properly, the screen will display a number. If the regulator is not working properly, the manometer will continue to read “0.”

Turn the gas valve off, remove the manometer and replace the cap back on the regulator. You may now turn the gas valve back on once the regulator is closed.
