How to Troubleshoot a Viking Oven That Only Stays on High

Viking ovens are available as stand-alone wall units, in a double or single option, as well as part of a range. The oven can be electric or gas. Regardless of which model you have in your home, you may encounter a problem with the temperature of the oven. When this happens, you can attempt to troubleshoot the problem on your own.
  1. Causes

    • As you use your Viking oven, you should be able to set it on high and have it stay there with no problem. However, you might experience a problem where the oven appears to be stuck on high. Under normal circumstances, there are only two instances where a Viking oven will stay on high. One is during a self-cleaning cycle and the other is a possible malfunction. The malfunction might mean that a part needs replacement or just that the oven needs calibration.

    Self-Cleaning

    • During the self-cleaning cycle, the temperature inside the oven gets extremely high. In fact, once the cycle is over, the door remains locked until the oven cools to a safe temperature. If the self-cleaning cycle is running, it is completely normal for the oven to stay on high.

    Temperature Calibration

    • If you are trying to use the oven on low but the temperature is actually high, then you might need to calibrate the oven temperature. Oven calibration is a way to lower or raise the temperature setting. You can access the thermostat for calibration by pulling off the temperature control knob and wiping away the silicone gel. Use a flat-head screwdriver to turn the screw counterclockwise one-quarter turn. This decreases the temperature. If the oven is still not cool enough, you can make another adjustment. Viking recommends that you only make one one-quarter adjustment at a time.

    Faulty Component

    • If you cannot get your Viking oven to lower in temperature, the unit might have a faulty internal component. This component can be the thermostat or another part. To determine which part is bad, consult with a local appliance technician to get a diagnostic report on the oven. Once you know the exact part that is bad, you will know if you can proceed on your own or if you need to pay for a repair.
