How to Use Kenmore Sewing Machine Spool Pins

Kenmore sewing machines are marketed exclusively by Sears. The Kenmore name first appeared in the 1913 fall catalog, according to the Sears archives. For many years, Kenmore featured vertically mounted spool pins on its machines, which hold thread spools in position, allowing them to freely rotate as the thread unwinds while sewing. Newer Kenmore machines are equipped with a permanently installed horizontal spool pin. An optional vertical pin is provided in the Kenmore tool kit. The first step in using your Kenmore is deciding which spool pins you want to use.

Instructions

  1. Horizontal Spool Pins

    • 1

Find the horizontal spool pin on the top of your Kenmore sewing machine. The pin is within a recess and is spring-loaded, which allows it to be raised slightly when installing a thread spool.

    • 2

Raise the pin and slide a thread spool onto it. The thread should unwind from the spool toward the rear of the sewing machine, away from you.

    • 3

Slide the thread spool retainer onto the spool pin. The retainer prevents the thread spool from being pulled forward during sewing operations. The retainer is a flat round disk in the accessory compartment of your sewing machine.

    • 4

Route the thread from the horizontal spool pin to the needle.

    Vertical Spool Pins

    • 5

Locate the vertical spool pin in the accessory compartment. The pin has a square base used for mounting.

    • 6

Find the square hole at the top of the sewing machine. The hole is forward from the tip of the horizontal spool pin.

    • 7

Insert the base of the vertical spool pin into the square hole. Press the base in firmly.

    • 8

Slide a spool of thread over the vertical pin with the thread unwinding from the back side, away from you.

    • 9

Route the thread to the needle for sewing or bobbin winding.
